Companies Turn Toward “Data Sifters” & “Data Banks” to Commoditize on ‘Smart Object’ Data

Anyone who is anti “Big Brother”, this may not be the article for you, in fact skip it. 🙂
In the not so distant future, “Data Sifter” companies consisting of Subject Matter Experts (SME) across all verticals,  may process your data feeds collected from ‘smart objects’.   Consumers will be encouraged to submit their Smart data to ‘data sifters’ who will offer incentives such as a reduction of insurance premiums.
Everything from activity trackers, home automation, to vehicular automation data may be captured and aggregated.    The data collected can then be sliced and diced to provide macro and micro views of the information.    On the abstract, or macro level the information may allow for demographic, statistical correlations, which may contribute to corporate strategy.
On a granular view, the data will provide “data sifters” the opportunity to sift through ‘smart’ object data to perform analysis, and correlations that lead to actionable information.
Is it secure?  Do you care if a hacker steals your weight loss information?  In fact, you might feel more nervous if only the intended parties are allowed to collect the information. Collected ‘Smart Object’ data enables SMEs to correlate the data into:
  • Canned, ‘intelligent’ reports targeted to specific subject matter, or across silos of data
  • ‘Universes’ (i.e.  Business Objects) of data that may be ‘mined’ by consumer approved, ‘trusted’ third party companies, e.g. your insurance companies.
  • Actionable information based on AI subject matter rules engines

Consumers, people, may have the option of sharing their personal data with specific companies  by proxy, through a ‘data bank’ down to the data point collected   The sharing of personal data or information:

  1. may lower [or raise] your insurance premiums
  2. provide discounts on preventive health care products and services, e.g. vitamins to yoga classes
  3. Targeted, affordable,  medicine that may redirect the choice of the doctor to an alternate.  The MD would be contacted to validate the alternate.

The ‘smart object’ data collected may be harnessed by thousands of affinity groups to provide very discrete products and services.  The power of this collected ‘smart data’ and correlated information stretches beyond any consumer relationship experienced today.

At some point, health insurance companies may require you to wear a tracker to increase or slash premiums.  Auto Insurance companies may offer discounts for access to car smart data to make sure suggested maintenance guidelines for service are met.

You may approve your “data bank” to give access to specific soliciting government agencies or private research firms looking to analyze data for their studies. You may qualify based on the demographic, abstracted data points collected.   Incentives provided may be tax credits, or paying studies.

‘Smart Object’ Adoption and Affordability

If ‘Smart Objects’, Internet of Things (IoT) enabled, are cost inhibiting.  here are a few ways to increase their adoption:
  1.  [US] tax coupons to enable the buyer, at the time of purchase, to save money.  For example, a 100 USD discount applied at the time of purchase of an Activity Tracker, with the stipulation that you may agree,  at some point, to participate in a study.
  2. Government subsidies: the cost of ‘Smart Objects’ through annual tax deductions.  Today, tax incentives may allow you to purchase a ‘Smart Object’ if the cost is an itemized medical tax deduction, such as an Activity Tracker that monitors your heart rate, if your medical condition requires it.
  3. Auto, Life, Homeowners, and Health policy holders may qualify for additional insurance deductions
  4. Affinity branded ‘Smart Objects’ , such as American Lung Association may sell a logo branded Activity Tracker.  People may sponsor the owner of the tracking pedometer to raise funds for the cause.
The World Bank has a repository of data, World DataBank, which seems to store a large depth of information:
World Bank Open Data: free and open access to data about development in countries around the globe.”

Adjustable Data Quota Limits on Member’s of Family/Shared Data Plans

A cap on the amount of shared data each person in the plan is allowed to use should be adjustable at any point in the billing cycle. Good Use Case:  my kids are on my family plan, and I want to limit their data usage.  They always use more than my wife and I.

Another possible use case, from a small business perspective, if you add a few lines on your plan, then you may allocate to specific type of employees, such as sales reps., specific amounts of data.  There are several types of widgets can be used, such as a pie chart, and the total pie represents the total data package, and each slice represents an allocation to each member of the shared plan.

Update: I stand corrected, and do see an AT&T Smart Limits for 4.99 USD per month:

Mandatory Service for Your Smartphone: Change the Oil Please

As a way to continue to sell into their existing channel, as well as retain their existing customer base, I might try a sales/marketing strategy if I was a wireless carrier, which would bring in existing customers every six months into the store.

Analogous to an oil change for your car, or mandatory service, I would require existing customer base into a participating wireless carrier partner to perform the following on the existing user’s smartphone:

  •  Check the performance of the smartphone upon existing ‘idle conditions’, and determine if there are any application [services] are required to run by querying the user, and uninstalling any currently unused applications.
  • Check the performance of the smartphone upon start up, and see if there are any performance enhancement tools can be installed to the smartphone to help curb the usage of the memory and CPU cycles.  Company may advocate new third party products for the smartphone platform.
  • Depending upon the timing and the available deals, company may advocate any third party peripheral products, such as a car charger,or an male to male jack to plug the sound into your car to play music; a Bluetooth headset, or help connect your phone to your cars existing Bluetooth system.
  • Depending upon the timing and the available deals, company may advocate for an upgrade to the existing smartphone, either the Operating System or the hardware.
  • The company may try to sell another line into the package; i.e. sell additional lines, or new features that may be available at the current time, or conversion from a single to a family / multiple line package.

NFC Patch for Sun Tanning

Just like there are patches to quit smoking, coming soon,  there is a waterproof patch with an NFC chip to enable you to gauge your appropriate level of sun tan.  This patch will observe the level of sun rays passing through the patch as well as the portion of the patch that let’s no rays through.  It will then determine the delta, including pigment changes, as well as other attributes in your epidermis that change, then provide day on day changes to measure and alert to sustain a pigmentation level of desired effect from the companion smartphone application.  Prevent or cause cancer but you do get a fashionable tan.

AMD and Dell to Partner on Alienware Smartphone: 8 x 1.9 GHz Cores with 4 GB RAM

In an unorthodox move by Dell, they partner up with AMD to produce a smartphone that is on par with their Alienware computers, and is to be included in their line, glowing Alien on the back and all.

The new phone, yet to be disclosed the project name, Alienware Smartphone will take the smartphone to their highest computational limits on the market today, so you should expect the device to have top of the line cameras, NFC, Bluetooth, removable battery, MicroSD, and it will be an unlocked phone.  That’s right, since so many carriers are starting to up the price and perform less subsidization, and require longer contracts, other carriers, such as T-Mobile are allowing bring your own phone, and their customers not obligated to contract.  They are also promoting paying full retail for phones, and including the phone in the monthly cost.

Dell Alienware hardware traditionally comes with high quality, but with a high price tag, so don’t expect any bargains, but do expect a blazing fast phone.

Silicone has Yet Another Use…Your Smartphone Case

The smartphone has just gotten a little bit dumber.

Neon colored silicone skins, at times filled with glittery materials, are to be used for absorbing shock when dropping your smartphone, as a waterproof case, and a stylish statement.   The waterproof case is still under testing.  The jelly like material is to be used in a soft skin like case that covers all sides of your smartphone, and a very thin skin of transparent silicone is to cover the front and back of the case, sealing it, to make it water proof, or at least water resistant.  The release timeframe is targeted for this summer, when people hope to enjoy…additional uses for silicone on the beaches.

Our Mind’s Eye Stream for Sale: Who will Own those Portals?

As we approach a brave new world of our Mind’s Eye for Sale, who will own that portal, or jump page to other view’s or other perspectives?  It gets more and more expensive to see the world, and harder to travel.  Sound like Total Recall, the movie, not far off from the path we’re already on without even realizing.  Portals to other people’s perspectives, such as Instagram, seeing life from other people’s interpretations of the world, it is fascinating and alluring to us.

Once the Genie is out of the bottle, it’s hard to turn back.  In all sincerity, a lightweight version of Google’s Android OS for Glass may even be downloadable, and free as it is based on open source.  The Glass is super stylish, but super expensive.  If you’re in the main stream you can afford the glass, if not, you can build your own.  Not that difficult relatively speaking, a kit from Texas Instruments perhaps, such as we’ve seen in the PC world, where they now offer small computer kits for building small computers with Android, and Linux.  If you wanted to build your own Google Glass, how fast will there be imitations, I imagine, faster than you can blink an eye, pun intended.

Google will make it popular and sexy, after that, there could be a flood of imitations.  After all, today we can all build knock off Google Glass, a tiny web cam, a lightweight OS, and Bluetooth integrated with your smartphone for two way interaction, streaming, and communications.  The lightweight OS could today be Linux, but the champion for this effort , Red Hat? No, they are a support and solutions group for a blend of Unix.   No, there are a few hurdles that Google must and have taken, in some cases, partnered with Verizon, who had their own blend of HUD at the 2013 CES conference.  Today, we might mock and jeer people who wore glasses with a mini cam on their glasses.  It might be clunky, the idea is to make it alluring to the masses, as well as going through iterations to make it an acceptable medium to the public.  Once Google, the trailblazer in this endeavor burns through the problems, it will pave the way for a massive wave of alternate choices, become a commodity.  It’s not just the issue with the UI, there are legal battles to be fought, privacy for example, is it safe to drive with them on, and so on.  There needs to be mainstream platforms, so people take advantage, and are lured to independent platforms.  Many other companies might follow, such as Amazon or other cloud based companies.  Maybe even independent sites, web sites, mobile apps, and others joining and integrating with APIs.

Are you getting smart with me? What time is it?

Looking at all the collectable antique watches is a great gauge to help identify all the potential opportunities for unique smart watches.  There was just an article that Microsoft might enter the watch product arena.

As I look at all the antique watches I am reselling, I realize there are several opportunities for smart watch uniqueness, looking back we can look at amazing advantages smart watches may hold for the consumer, analogous to the Train conductor’s timepiece,  to the uniqueness of the gauges contained within the watch.  What would the jewels articulate today, I e. Is there a correlation to the accuracy and technology today?  The bands, chains, and jewelry that affix the watch to the wearer are as important as the timepieces themselves.

Are the Technologists getting guidance from watch veterans in the industry, and anagously correlating styles as well as design, form, and gadget gimmicks to today’s men and woman?  The styles and brilliant time pieces made in the past may correlate to an opportunity which no company is prepaired for the brilliance displayed. The only question, are limited series smart watches feasible in today’s manufacturing model?

Time will tell.

All Fun and Games with Your Waterproof Smartphone Case

At the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, there were many case vendors, and some were touting decent depths and times for waterproof smartphone cases.  I think a fun activity for the kids, and adults this summer may be to toss the phone into the pool, and an application can chime sonar, just like those items you toss in the water, and the kids race to see who gets them first.  Of course, different submersibles are worth varying points, typically the blue ones, which match the pool liner will be worth more points.  I wonder what the Jaws theme sounds like under water?  How about at night, might be fun to toss the phone into the water and see a light show.  Maybe throw on a laser splitter to the mini USB port, and you can have a funky laser light show under water.  Sigh. I don’t get invited to those parties anymore.
